Irwin in Tokyo, Nov 2009

My first trip to Tokyo, Japan, was in the fall of 2005 during my third year at Princeton University. I had applied for a year-long study abroad program at Waseda University, setting off on a solo journey into the unknown—something completely fresh, new, and well outside my comfort zone. Looking back, I realize I didn’t dwell on the potential negatives (loneliness, homesickness, cultural differences). Instead, I was laser-focused on the incredible opportunities and experiences ahead. Some might call it innocence or naivety, but even now, I see that courage to embrace the unknown—faith, really—as one of the most important qualities I had as a young man.

But where did this fearless spirit come from? Was it simply a gift of youth, or was there something more?

After 20 years of reflection, I’ve come to understand that this confidence was deeply rooted in my development as a musical improviser. The art of improvisation, when paired with hard work, a strong moral compass, and boundless curiosity, became my guiding principle—not just in music, but in life. Faith in my ability to adapt and overcome, combined with a curious mindset, opened up endless possibilities.

That year in Tokyo, I also discovered my true values and how deeply I was committed to them. The setting was new, but my pursuits remained the same. I practiced tirelessly—only instead of a private basement practice room, it was in an open hallway alive with a cacophony of instruments, each musician carving out their own space. I spent late nights with local musicians, sipping cheap wine and listening to rare Japan-only jazz gems on hi-fi systems. Surprisingly, this turned out to be the best way to learn the language.

Fast forward 20 years, and music brought me back to Tokyo. This time, I joined the incredible John Carroll Kirby and his brilliant band for a tour across Japan. It was my first time playing with the group, and our energies meshed perfectly, like hand-in-glove. As we traveled and performed, I was flooded with cherished memories from my early days in Tokyo: getting lost on the trains, riding the bullet train for the first time, soaking in hot springs, exploring ancient shrines, sipping coffee in themed kissatens, and, of course, indulging in the incredible food.

Reflecting on these moments reminds me how far I’ve come and how much Tokyo still feels like a second home. Grateful for the journey and the lessons it continues to teach me!

The Takeaway

  • Embracing the unknown with faith and curiosity can lead to profound personal growth and unforgettable experiences.

  • The principles of improvisation—adaptability, creativity, and perseverance—extend far beyond music and can shape how we navigate life.

  • Revisiting meaningful places can reignite cherished memories and deepen our appreciation for the journey.
