Home of the Brave

Home of the Brave

America, the Beautiful

Education has always been a big deal in my family. Both my parents were the first in their families to go to college, and they made sure we understood the importance of learning and empowering ourselves through study. Growing up, our house was practically a library—two sets of encyclopedias and books covering every wall. My mom, a public school elementary teacher, made sure we didn’t stray too far from the path of curiosity and education (not that we dared!).

The confidence you get from learning and the perseverance it takes to earn a degree have always stuck with me. My time at Princeton University gave me skills, knowledge, and friendships I couldn’t have gained anywhere else, and I’m forever grateful for that experience.

So, three years ago, when I was invited to perform the American National Anthem for the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s (BMCC) graduation ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, it felt like a full-circle moment. This year, I planned to keep my rendition straightforward, but just before I stepped onstage, the program coordinator leaned in and said, “Don’t hold back. Take some liberties.”

With that green light, I added a touch of soul and a few carefully placed runs to make the anthem my own. It’s always an honor to celebrate the graduates and be part of such a meaningful day. Congratulations to the BMCC Class of 2024—here’s to chasing your dreams and making them your own!

And a special thank you to @rebel_pocahontas for the enouragement and capturing the moment!

The Takeaway

  • Education is a powerful tool for building confidence, perseverance, and lifelong opportunities.

  • Let us always remember to celebrate the achievements of others, as it reminds us of the potential within us all.

  • God Bless the USA.
